While tobacco is one of the products most affected by inflation (+9.8% over one year in May), France is one of the countries that consumes the most. On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Public Health France published a study which lists the number of daily smokers in France at 12 million in 2022.

The study recalls that smoking is “the first heat of avoidable mortality in France” with 75,000 attributable deaths in 2015.

A recovery following a decline of several years

While the number of smokers fell between 2016 and 2019, from 29.4% to 24%, it started to rise once more last year. In 2022, more than three out of ten people say they smoke and a quarter would smoke daily, i.e. 24.5% of French people. On a daily basis, men smoke more than women (27.4% vs. 21.7%).

One of the main trends that emerges from this study concerns the increase in vaping. In 2022, 41.2% of 18-75 year olds say they have tried electronic cigarettes at least once, compared to only 2.4% in 2016.

Cigarettes, a marker of social inequality

In the figures of Public Health France also emerges that between smokers and non-smokers, the social environment is important. They are 30% to smoke daily among people with no diploma or less than the Baccalaureate while they are only 16.8% among those with a diploma higher than the Baccalaureate.

The issue of employment also comes into play: 42.3% of the unemployed use tobacco compared to 26.14% of young working people and 19.1% of students.

The urge to quit is present in 6 out of 10 smokers

Despite the fact that smokers are more and more numerous, the desire to quit is present in the majority of them. They are 6 out of 10 to want to quit smoking, according to figures from the barometer of Public Health France 2021.

Men smokers are more likely than women to want to quit (61.7% vs 56.5%).

The government, for its part, continues the fight once morest smoking and wishes to achieve a first generation without tobacco in 2032.
