The 2021 Health Statistics Report is interesting in more ways than one. Published a few days ago by the supervisory ministry, it gives an overview of the sector and the health of Mauritians. The least we can say is that the situation is hardly encouraging. Below are some numbers.
There were eight major causes of death last year. They killed 10,851 people. Covid-19 is the sixth. Last year she was the direct cause of 785 people, 411 men and 374 women.
However, it has been noted that the number of deaths of people with co-morbidities has increased. Some of them suffered from Covid-19, but the virus was not considered the cause of death. The two leading causes of death by far are heart disease and diabetes, which together are responsible for 41.2% of deaths.
