Health, open to modernizing the MIR system without eradicating it

Celia Gómez, director of Professional Planning.

Celia Gómez this Monday has valued the current system of MIR choicewhich has been described as “successful” and “reasonable” for applicants. Asked regarding the more than 200 vacancies that have been left unfilled in the last edition, the director of Professional Planning has conceded that the Government, unions and the rest of the agents involved in the process can address a “reflection” on the current systemalthough he has rejected the idea of betting on another type of transformation: “I don’t think that in the future we will have to think of other formulas,” he stressed.

During his speech at the conference ‘Present and future of Primary Care in Spain‘, organized by the movement ‘Save Primary Care’, the director of Professional Management has denied that the fact that 217 vacancies have remained unfilled constitutes a failure, and has stressed that this problem is not new. “In 2014 they were more or less the same, and the coincidence of the units in which it happened was 95 percent,” she has alleged.

On the reasons that have caused this situation, Gómez has pointed out that they are “difficult to cover positions” as is the case of Family Medicine, a specialty in which in the last edition of the MIR there were 200 vacancies.

It has also appealed to the significant number of graduates from faculties of Medicine and MI vacanciesR. In this sense, you have indicated that there was “a bag of people who at the time had not obtained a term and who now, with the volumes of last year, have been absorbed.”

“There are many substantive issues, and I’m not saying you shouldn’t think of alternatives, but in the part of the places of graduates the data is evident. Many non-community people show up, many enter with a court note and others do not, ”he concluded.

Last week, the Ministry of Health ratified the modification of the order so that the extracommunitarians that they were left out of the quota they can access to occupy those 218 places that the first applicants did not want, and that, broken down, 200 correspond to Family Medicine; 8 of Occupational Medicine, 8 to the specialty of Preventive Medicine and Public Health; and 1 to the specialty of Microbiology and Parasitology.

Urgent action plan in Primary Care

In the act of this Monday, Gómez has also referred to the urgent action plan for Primary Care, which was initially scheduled for April. In this regard, that the next Interterritorial Council will address some issues of the project, such as actions or the distribution of funds.

Gómez has indicated that the plans submitted by the autonomous communities “were incomplete” for different reasons. “In some the financing was not indicated and in others there was no specification of objectives”, he has highlighted.
