Russia – Biologist Irina Layalina revealed the health benefits of drinking tomato juice, and how it helps relieve tension and psychological stress.

The scientist said in an interview with the “Izvestia” newspaper: “The percentage of water in the tomatoes from which tomato juice is made is 90 percent.” Accordingly, this juice is considered a diet. In addition, it is rich in vitamins A, C, B6, PP, K, Mg, organic acids and pectic substances. It also enhances the secretion of the hormone serotonin, thus helping to relieve tension and psychological pressure. The red color indicates the presence of lycopene in tomatoes, which is a natural pigment with antioxidant properties.”

According to her, this juice helps maintain youth, reduce heart disease (because it lowers the level of bad cholesterol, increases the elasticity of blood vessels and reduces the formation of blood clots), and prevents cancer.

“Most lycopene is found in ripe tomato peels,” she says. Heat treatment (boiling or sterilization) when preparing tomato juice destroys some vitamins, while the level of lycopene, on the contrary, increases during heat treatment (the highest percentage of lycopene is found in sun-dried tomatoes).”

The scientist points out that it is not recommended to drink more than two cups of tomato juice a day, and it is preferable to drink it 30 minutes before or following a meal.

She says: “Tomato juice has choleretic and anti-inflammatory properties, and is therefore beneficial for people who suffer from low stomach acidity and duodenal diseases.” It is also without sugar, good for diabetics (the glycemic index of tomato juice is very low – 38). Tomato juice is useful for children and those who want to lose weight. Pregnant women should also drink it because it helps overcome toxicosis, swelling and constipation. But breastfeeding mothers are not advised to take it, because it can cause diarrhea and allergies in children.”

According to her, sweet peppers, leafy vegetables, nuts and a spoonful of cream can be added to tomato juice.

She points out that the most beneficial juice is the juice from ripe seasonal tomatoes, not from the winter greenhouse. When purchasing juice from the store, you must read the label, as it is preferable that it does not contain any preservatives, except for the permitted citric or ascorbic acids, and no flavorings, salt, sugar, or sugar substitutes.

It is recommended to buy tomato juice intended for children, because it is prepared according to a technology that complies with officially approved technical standards.
