Health alert on sexually transmitted diseases

The Ministry of Health of the province of Río Negro warned regarding the risk of the most frequent sexually transmitted infections. Through social networks, he reported that these infections include syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes simplex, and hepatitis B and C. There are also infections by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the virus of the human immunodeficiency syndrome (better known as HIV).

These diseases can be transmitted from one person to another through vaginal, anal or oral sex, the Health portfolio clarified. They don’t just affect young people. They can be acquired at any age regardless of the gender or sexual orientation of each person.

Much of sexually transmitted infections can be cured through specific treatments, as in the case of syphilis, but it is important to detect symptoms and access timely diagnosis.

In other diseases, such as herpes simplex and HIV, they can be treated, controlled and become chronic diseases.

“Most sexually transmitted diseases are prevented with the proper use of a latex condom or field during oral, anal, and vaginal intercourse,” highlighted the Ministry.

In the case of syphilis, it is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium. It is transmitted by sexual contact or from the infected mother to the child during pregnancy/delivery.

bacteria. Three different bacteria cause chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Syphilis can be asymptomatic or present in different ways, such as ulcers or sores in the mouth, anus, vagina, vulva, or penis, which do not cause pain and disappear on their own in a short time. But the infection can continue and does not mean that it has been cured.

In addition, non-itchy lesions or spots may appear on the skin, especially on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. These lesions may be accompanied by swollen lymph nodes, hair loss, and fever. On the other hand, in the case of transmission from an infected mother to newborns, malformations and intrauterine death can be caused if syphilis is not treated promptly.

The Health portfolio emphasized that syphilis is curable. “There are treatments for those who suffer from this disease and also for pregnant people who can carry out the treatment to avoid infection to the baby, through antibiotics”he highlighted.

To find out if a person has this infection, a blood test is done. This practice is free and is done in all hospitals and health centers in the province. If there is any of the symptoms or any doubt regarding a risk relationship, a person can take the test and make a medical consultation. Pregnant people and their partners should consult and test for this infection in the three trimesters of pregnancy.

If the test result is positive, it is essential that the affected person and their partner receive treatment. If treatment is not received, serious long-term complications can occur.
