Health, agriculture and mass distribution: a job-creating context for engineers

The health, agriculture and mass distribution sectors are going through transitions, to varying degrees, which will offer engineers new opportunities in the years to come.

While the world is slowly emerging from the COVID crisis, the French pharmaceutical industry sector is ending this period with one certainty: it is necessary for the French industry to relocate the production of certain drugs and pharmaceutical products. A complex ambition to implementsince today, 80% of raw materials and drugs produced by the pharmaceutical industry are in Asia. It is therefore a question of developing a supply chain and a logistics chain capable of allowing France, and Europe, to regain a certain degree of sovereignty in its supply of pharmaceutical products and medicines. This is particularly true for antibiotics and paracetamolin shortage in some countries until a few weeks ago.

Innovation also remains at the heart of the concerns of the health sectors. Following the express development of mRNA vaccines once morest COVID during the health crisis, laboratories are working on new bronchiolitis vaccines in infants for example, or even once morest certain cancers. This trend towards innovation, inherent to the sector, but whose intensity has increased since the end of the COVID crisis, is already benefiting young graduates, and will lead to the creation of numerous jobs in the future: in fact, the current development of telemedicine, robotization, modeling requires the recruitment of young engineers who will be able to imagine, develop, and use these new technologies.

Agriculture in full modernization

The agricultural sector is also in transition. New technologies – drones, tool connectivity, artificial intelligence – need, as we have just mentioned for the health sector, engineers capable of developing and using them.

Also, the transition to more sustainable, less polluting agriculture brings with it the creation of many new jobs for engineers.

The agricultural sector, of which more than 70% of production is transformed by the agri-food sector, drags the latter in its wake. We must remember, as was also the case for the pharmaceutical sector, that the agri-food industry suffered from the health crisis, then the war in Ukraine: as evidenced by the recent shortages of mustard and wheat. These weaknesses have been highlighted and taken care of, whether at European or national level, through for example the France 2030 plan. This funding and the desire for relocation are already attracting many new jobs.

Finally, the subject of adaptation of the agricultural sector to climate change is a major subject of the coming decade. In this sense, the very rapid development by the industry of artificial intelligence technologies – to make it possible to best optimize agricultural yields, anticipate climatic events, limit water consumption, etc. – constitutes a fundamental challenge for the entire sector. And those which, like the agri-food industry, are closely associated with it.

Finally, the last element which will boost recruitment in the sector in the years to come, the need to innovate and develop, at the agri-food level, the capacity of the sector to feed nearly ten billion inhabitants by 2050. Note that for the year 2023, the number of recruitments in the agricultural sector is estimated at 8,000.

Mass distribution, a shield once morest inflation?

Finally, the current economic context, marked by high inflation, is forcing the mass distribution sectors to innovate to limit the impact of the increase in the price of raw materials on their customers’ wallets. To do this, priority was given to the development of short supply chains and the most local distribution circuits possible. In parallel with this movement, the development of e-commerce, booming since the health crisis, competes with mass distribution brands, but at the same time creates numerous jobs. Whether online or physically, distribution, which must meet the challenges of supply, logistics and ecological transition, will massively recruit engineers in the years to come to meet these challenges, even if the latter are not yet turning massively towards this sector.
