Headless body found in Vienna cellar: identity still unclear

The state police headquarters confirmed corresponding media reports on Friday. “The person died due to external influence,” explained spokeswoman Julia Schick. The body had, among other things, stab and cut injuries on the arms and hands from a possible defensive fight, said Schick. However, the identity is still unclear.

Workers discovered a black bag

Workers made the gruesome discovery in an apartment building on Tuesday followingnoon. During preparatory excavations for concreting in an open basement compartment, the men found the large black bag from which a pungent smell was emanating and alerted the police.

Badly decomposed corpse

The officers found a badly decomposed body. The body apparently had not been completely dismembered. The head lay separately next to it. Due to the degree of decomposition, the dead person must have been there for a long time. The gender and identity of the deceased was initially unclear, said Schick. The reason for the initially impossible determination was the situation in which the body was found. The body was seized and taken to the coroner’s office.
