The secretary’s plane landed at 6:08 p.m. at the Arturo Merino Benítez Airport in the Chilean capital, where he was received by the US ambassador to Chile, Bernadette Meehan.

The leader of US diplomacy will meet on Wednesday with Boric and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejolato address issues such as the migration crisis, human rights, the climate crisis and the search for investment.

The meeting will take place one month following the referendum in which Chileans overwhelmingly rejected the proposal for a new Constitution, considered the greenest and most feminist in the world, in a heavy blow to the Boric government.

After the meeting with the Chilean president, the Secretary of State is expected to visit the National Electrical Coordinator of Chile (CEN), where there is participation of US companies.

He will also meet with alumni of Young Leaders of the Americas, a US-sponsored educational program, before continuing his tour to Peru.

Despite the ideological differences with Boric, a former student leader who became the youngest president in the country’s history in MarchWashington looks favorably on its commitment to the environment and human rights.

Specifically, it celebrates the criticism that Boric has made for the human rights violations committed by the governments of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua.

However, the Chilean president was critical of the decision of the United States to exclude Caracas and Managua from the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles (USA) last June.

The Secretary of State began a tour of Latin America on Monday with the aim of trying to bring positions closer together with the leftist governments of Colombia, Chile and Peru.

Blinken travels accompanied by Juan González, senior adviser to President Joe Biden for Latin America, and the undersecretary of the Department of State for Latin American affairs, Brian Nichols.
