According to the minister, Russia has an imperialist ideology, so its threat will remain even if the president changes, Ukraine regains its territories, or Russia loses the war.
“Russia will not stop, Russia can only be stopped. The suspension of Russia in Ukraine does not mean that everything is over. It just means we’ll have to keep going. This is what is important for NATO: we will have to work on a long-term strategy to contain Russia”, K. Karinis added.
NATO must increase its capabilities and defense industry interoperability, which will allow standardization of various weapons systems and more ammunition and artillery sharing among allies, noted the head of diplomacy.
In his opinion, as soon as the war ends, Russia will begin to rebuild its military apparatus. First of all, a terrorist country will seek to provoke and create new difficulties on its border. Therefore, in K.Karinio’s opinion, NATO must prevent any future incidents with its determination and investments in defense.
“Russia is not only a problem for Ukraine, it will pose a danger to all of Europe even following the war in Ukraine. If Ukraine regains its territory, Russia will still pose a threat. This means that we have to adapt our thinking to a long-term perspective”, emphasized the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
