Head of Astronomical Research: Today’s earthquake was followed by 15 aftershocks…and this is the reason why it was not felt

Dr. Jad Al-Qadi, head of the National Institute for Astronomical Research, said that the Gulfs of Aqaba and Suez are among the areas that witness seismic activity at a daily rate, but that the recorded tremors are not felt.

Al-Qadi added, in a telephone interview with the “Cairo Talk” program, with the media, Karima Awad, on the Cairo and Al-Nas channel, on Tuesday evening, that the earthquake in the Al-Tur region is not a new matter in this region, and it was repeated several times during the previous years, indicating that the earthquake was strong. 5 degrees on the Richter scale.

He continued: The earthquake was followed by a number of 15 followingshocks, indicating that these followingshocks were not felt by anyone due to the absence of tall buildings, elevations or population centers, and the intensity of these followingshocks ranged between 2 and 3.5 degrees on the Richter scale.

Today, Tuesday, corresponding to 12/27/2022, the stations of the National Seismological Network recorded an earthquake, 26 kilometers southwest of Al-Tur.

The National Institute for Astronomical Research revealed that the earthquake occurred at: 02:11:02 am local time, with a magnitude of 5 degrees on the Richter scale, at latitude 28.04 north, longitude: 33.48 east, and depth: 9.61 km.

The National Institute for Astronomical Research indicated that the institute received information indicating that the tremor was felt, and it did not report any loss of life or property.
