Oddbjorn Holum Heiland, a resident of the Norwegian town of Setesdal, was gardening at his home when he wandered into an ancient tomb with artifacts and weapons from the Viking Age, Science Norway reported.

Heiland planned to expand his house so he began to dig a foundation pit. While doing his work, he came across an oblong stone and assumed that it was a tombstone. “I wasn’t going to dig very much, just a little bit on the slope behind the house,” he recounted.

He removed the grass and topsoil and the first thing he found was a Viking sword (Joakim Wintervoll – sciencenorway).

According to what was related, he also discovered objects similar to the hilt and blade of a sword. The Norwegian national investigated online and, concluding that they were part of a Viking sword, stopped digging and notified the authorities.

Archaeologists estimate that the weapon dates from between the end of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th century. The blade of the sword was broken and would have fragmented during the burial ritual.

In addition, a gold-plated belt buckle, a bronze clasp for capes, and a cavalry lance were found in the grave.

The tomb is believed to belong to a warrior horseman (Joakim Wintervoll – sciencenorway).

The remains of the person who was buried have not yet been found. However, archaeologists believe that the tomb belonged to a high social class individual from the Viking Age, because the warriors did not use swords, but axes and spears.
