He sued a woman because she left him in the “friendzone”

The man wanted “something more”, but his friend set limits that he did not accept.

A Singaporean man sued a woman after she told him she wants to be no more than his friend, and is now demanding S$3 million (US$2.3 million) for the emotional trauma.

The court hearing is scheduled for this month.

The plaintiff, identified as Kawshigan, originally sought to claim S$22,000 (US$16,620) for the shock he suffered from the rejection of his love.

He assured that his ability to generate income was reduced as an “active high-capital ‘trader’ at night and a busy CEO during the day,” according to court documents obtained by the local chain CNA.

However, that lawsuit was annulled in late January for being considered an abuse of process and for the court’s refusal to be complicit in the “calculated attempt [del demandante] of forcing to compromise” the young lady.

In his latest lawsuit, Kawshigan, a director at the drone company D1 Racing, accused the woman of defamation between June 2019 and December 2020 for her statements in the presence of third parties that she felt harassed.

He argued that this damaged his “stellar reputation” and led to “trauma, depression and impacts on his life” over the past year, as well as the loss of at least five business partners.

The $2.3 million he is now claiming is also intended to compensate for his reduced ability to generate income for two years and the loss of possible investments, contracts and payments to his company.

The happy ‘friendzone’

The culprit of everything, according to Kawshigan, is Nora Tan Shu Mei, whom he met in 2016. The two had a good friendship, but around September 2020 “they misaligned themselves about how they saw their relationship.”

She saw him as a friend while he considered that there were closer ties. Arguing on the subject, Tan wanted to cut back on their interactions, much to Kawshigan’s displeasure.

The woman insisted on the need to set limits and reduce the frequency of their encounters, urging her friend to be “self-sufficient.”

However, the man was not satisfied and later invited her to participate in therapeutic sessions, which she agreed to, thinking that they would help Kawshigan to accept things as they were.

The visits to the psychologist lasted a year and a half and ended when Tan felt they were “useless and pointless.” He also felt more pressure from Kawshigan’s “unreasonable requests.”

From courtship to stalking

It was sometime before April 2022 that the woman started legal proceedings against Kawshigan, directly accusing him of harassment. As a result, she obtained a protective order and filed a counterclaim.

Tan stated that Kawshigan had sent him threatening messages telling him that he should maintain his communications or else face civil prosecution or police action.

In July of last year, the man appeared at the door of her house, where he remained standing despite asking him to leave, the woman said.

After that incident, Kawshigan went to her neighbors for her phone number and threatened to show up at work if she refused to keep in touch with him. According to her Tan, said threat she came to fulfill, although she was not there at that time.

Now Tan is demanding around S$1,480 (US$1,118) for the costs of his own security and therapy sessions that Kawshigan had insisted on.

After Kawshigan’s harassing acts, Tan says she was forced to install a digital peephole, an alarm sensor, and a smart video doorbell.
