The beginning is in Kuwait

He did not know that the traffic accident he suffered and his hand was broken would constitute his real breakthrough in the world of art, specifically in the corridors of Kuwaiti radio in the year 1960. At that time, a friend invited him to Kuwait to spend a period of convalescence and recreation, and he was twenty years old. Coincidence brought him together that day with the late Kuwaiti composer Awad Al-Doukhi, who encouraged him to learn to play the oud with a colleague named Morsi Al-Hariri, a blind Egyptian composer.

To Lebanon and Rehabna

Elie stayed in Kuwait for more than a year, during which he performed some small concerts and got acquainted with Gulf music and learning its rhythms. In the middle of 1962, the Lebanese band “Al-Anwar” arrived in Kuwait as part of an artistic tour that it was carrying out, and it consisted of several Lebanese singers, including Wadih Al-Safi, Souad Al-Hashem, Zaki Nassif and Tawfiq Al-Basha … Nostalgia awoke in Elie’s soul and he decided to return to his country following he attended a show for the band , with a letter from a friend in Kuwait requesting a Lebanese musician named Joseph Chamaa, who lives in Lebanon, to support Elie’s talent. And so it was.

Eli became a member of a choir that included him to Candle and Nicola the Rooster. He was among the team accompanying a number of artists, including Fahd Ballan and Nozha Younes.

In 1963, Choueiri learned that preparations were taking place behind the scenes to revive the Baalbek Festival, under the supervision of musician Romeo Lahoud. So he went to his office, and from there Lahoud took him with him on a trip in his car to Ashrafieh, the center of Choueiri’s residence, promising to give him a small role in the play “The Waterfall”… Meanwhile, the brothers Assi and Mansour Al-Rahbani were looking for new artistic faces, and they were impressed by Elie’s performance on the stage. Thus, he began his journey with authentic art, considering that this opportunity enabled him to recognize his talent. He participated with Al-Rahbanah in 25 theatrical works, including “The Person”, “Fakhr El-Din”, “The Night and the Lamp”, “Sah al-Num”, “The Wheels of the Air” and the movie “Bayaa al-Khawat”. The late journalist Saeed Freiha, founder of Dar Al-Sayyad, described him as an icon at the Al-Rahbneh crossing.

Elie Choueiri was not content with standing beside the adults, so he unleashed his works, so he wrote “My Country” and “You and I, Ya Lail” from his poetry and melodies, and the singing of Wadih Al-Safi.

Separation from the mercy

In 1966, Elie Choueiri married Aida Abi Ad, and he had three daughters: Nicole, Carol, and Selina. Following a dispute with Al-Rahbaneh, Choueiri separated from them and resorted to an audible medium to express his deep feelings and feelings following the outbreak of the war in 1975. He presented, in cooperation with the late journalist Sami Ghumika, the “Ya Allah” program, which was a social criticism that met with success on the “Voice of Lebanon” radio. Then, Al-Shahrora met Sabah in the play “Sitt Al-Kul” and it was a new beginning for his artistic career. He wrote and composed “Tala wa Ta’tamar Ya Dar” and became famous. The Syrian government sent in his request, and he started performing one concert following another, so his financial condition improved following he was suffering from a deteriorating living situation.

Elie Choueiri created fame for more than one artist, including Dalida Rahma, for whom he wrote the play “Qawoosh Al-Afrah” and she sang for him “Ya Balah Zaghlouli”, which became on every lips and tongue. Likewise, Magda Al-Roumi sang to him “The Mask Has Fallen”, “Who is there but you” and “Al-Omar is still a thief”, and both Sabah and Samira Tawfiq competed to perform the song “Ayam Al-Lulu”, which sparked a whirlwind in the world of singing at the time, especially since the first song was attributed to her. While the second confirmed that she was the first to choose her. However, the song was remarkably popular with the singers, following each of them performed it in their own way.

Elie Choueiri weaved a network of friendships with a few colleagues in the profession, to form companions on the path, including the late Philemon Wehbe and Nasri Shams El Din. However, Melhem Barakat was the closest to him, and they used to spend many days together, remembering stations from the past, especially while they were practicing the hobby of fishing.
