Before embarking on assembling a PC, it is important to have prior knowledge to avoid making costly mistakes, as delicate components like the processor can be both fragile and expensive. And one person unfortunately experienced the consequences of this reality by making a regrettable mistake.
Building a PC clearly isn’t for everyone.
For those familiar with PC assembly, we are familiar with the potential problems that can arise. Recently, a player made a particularly embarrassing mistake, as reported on Reddita technical support representative the player had contacted.
The problem arises from the fact that the AMD processor he chose didn’t fit his new motherboard. The player attempted to forcefully insert a Ryzen 9 5900X in an AM5 motherboardwhile this processor is designed for use with an AM4 motherboard. Note that this Ryzen 9 5900X is available on the market for around €320.
Why this incompatibility? CPUs are placed in a socket on each motherboard, and some CPUs are only compatible with specific sockets. In this case, the Ryzen 9 5900X requires an AM4 motherboard, while the user attempted to install it on an AM5 motherboard, which resulted in issues and possibly even bent pins on the back of the processor. Which turns out to be a real horror sight for us computer fans.
The posted photo clearly shows that the user tried to forcefully insert his Ryzen processor, designed for an AM4 socket, into an AM5 motherboard, which does not work at all. This situation surprised many members of the Reddit community, as the error might have been avoided quite easily. One user even commented saying:
Just one video… Just one fucking video might have prevented this. Why don’t people do any research?
A check of the processor manual or even the motherboard would also have made it possible to spot the incompatibility of the two components together before purchase.
AMD and Intel regularly develop new sockets for their processors
The diversity of sockets is justified by the constant evolution of functionalities. Technological advances are gradually transforming the characteristics of sockets, and some of these developments do not lend themselves to easy upgrades. One of the most eloquent examples is memory management.
For illustration :
The AM3+ socket offered compatibility with DDR3 memory.AM4 officially introduced support for DDR4.As for AM5, it makes way for DDR5.
Moreover, the AM5 socket brings with it PCIe 5.0ensuring faster data rates and higher bandwidth compared to AM4.
Note that these AM4 and AM5 sockets have very different installations, which means that heat sinks designed for one are not necessarily compatible with the other. However, many manufacturers offer adapters or bracket kits to allow old heatsinks to be used with new motherboards.
It is important to note that it there is no backward compatibility between sockets. For example, AMD processors, such as those intended for the AM3+ or AM4 socket, cannot be inserted into an AM5 motherboard due to major differences in socket construction.
And then, attempting this operation would only risk damaging your precious equipment like a certain person did…
