He pushed his nephew into the water and watched him drown

The woman initially mentioned to officers that she did not know the boy, then claimed that she was holding the boy’s shirt and dropped the garment because he was “misbehaving.”

A 3-year-old boy who was allegedly pushed into Lake Michigan in Chicago by his aunt last week has died, authorities said.

Josiah Brown, who had been in serious condition since being pulled from the lake last Monday, was pronounced dead shortly following 10 a.m. Sunday, the Cook County coroner’s office said.

Victoria Moreno, 34, the boy’s aunt, was charged last week with attempted murder and aggravated assault of a child under the age of 13 resulting in permanent disability.

He remains in the Cook County Jail without bond. Authorities are expected to update the charges following Josiah Brown’s death.

Prosecutors said Moreno was at Navy Pier in Chicago when she allegedly pushed the boy into the lake and then stood by as he sank. Divers found it at the bottom of the lake a half hour later.

The woman initially mentioned to officers that she did not know the boy, then claimed that she was holding the boy’s shirt and dropped the garment because he was “misbehaving.”

It was revealed that on the day of the events, the victim’s mother left the child at his grandmother’s house, where Moreno also lives. While another aunt went to wake her children and her grandmother went to change, Moreno stole the family’s truck and drove the little boy into town from Des Plaines, according to prosecutors.

Moreno stole the keys to the family’s truck and ran out of the residence without anyone knowing she was gone. The other aunt no longer heard the boy speak and became alarmed. It was then that she noticed that Moreno and the child had left, ”authorities specified.

Neighbors of the family said the boy’s father has a medical problem that has required him to be taken out on stretchers and ambulances several times in recent weeks.

The father, Dantrell Brown, posted on social media regarding his congestive heart failure diagnosis three years ago at age 22, just days before his son’s birth.

Moreno will appear in court once more on September 30. In addition, the accused will have no contact with the witnesses or with her family.
