It’s a rather funny story that a magistrate on duty at the Liège public prosecutor’s office had to deal with… This Sunday, at 3:30 p.m., the owner of a Ford Fiesta arrested a man, busy dismantling the bumper of his vehicle. The police arrived at the scene, rue de la Station in Liège, and arrested the thief. What he says during his hearing is rather surprising.
He explains that he himself owns a Ford Fiesta that he wishes to resell. To get a good price, better quality bumpers would be welcome. His are indeed damaged. He therefore drove through the streets of Liège in order to find a vehicle identical to his, and thus steal the two structures. So he parked nearby to make the exchange.
Not being a seasoned mechanic, and in order not to damage his future new bumpers, the 40-year-old first undertook to dismantle his own. He was able to see where the screws were. He also removed the grille, because his was also in poor condition.
Small detail, the bumpers were not the same color as those of his own car. Never mind, the man is currently training in bodywork: he was simply going to repaint them.
Before the police arrived, the man had reassembled the injured motorist’s bumpers, even promising to fix a small daytime problem between the headlights and the structure.
He admitted the facts and is the subject of an accelerated citation. He is not known to the courts.
