He modifies a Fisher-Price controller to play Elden Ring on PC

Where’s the fun in passing Elden Ring with a conventional controller? After a dozen bananas were used to beat Godrick in early March, it’s a Fisher-Price children’s controller’s turn to help one player survive the Lands Between.

We owe this sweet madness to notorious streamer and patentee Rudeism, who modified the toymaker’s colorful and rather atypical controller into a fully viable peripheral compatible with FromSoftware’s latest game. The New Zealander then presented the whole thing in a video shared on Twitter.

Asked by The VergeRudeism explained that it embedded a microcontroller board inside the Fisher-Price Game & Learn, before adding a real joystick and a few microswitches to make the big directional button and top triggers fully operational.

However, everything would have been done at the expense of the internal battery, which had to be abandoned to free up space.

Finally, the finished product turns out to be very interesting. Not only can the controller still be used in its original Fisher-Price form, it can also transform into an Xbox-style controller when connected to a PC. And even if it lacks a few buttons, the shortcomings are cleverly compensated.

In doing so, the two top triggers can each be operated in two ways, while the yellow switch on the front allows you to change the function of the joystick (left or right) and buttons A, B and C (which become Start, Select et Guide).

According to Rudeism, the project took regarding two weeks to complete and was initially inspired by a publication of Wario 64, an American discount hunter on Twitter. While sharing a Game & Learn controller on sale, he jokingly mentioned that the kids’ controller would be “perfect for Elden Ring“. And that was enough for Rudeism to see it as a challenge!

The latter also told The Verge that it was one of his favorite creations because of its “clean” look. Let’s say it’s not nothing, especially if we take into consideration the other works of the hacker: a button to pass Dark Souls III with morse code only, a lightsaber and a glove to postpone the immersion in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and… a beak, wings and webbed feet (!) to control the cursed goose ofUntitled Goose Game.

Are we dealing with a modern Leonardo da Vinci? Come to think of it, maybe that’s the case!
