July 28 could be a historic day for world politics, as Chavismo, after 25 years in power, could fall at the hands of Edmundo González, a man who is widely loved around the world, but about whom few know anything.
He is 74 years old and is the presidential candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform, which brings together all the opposition movements to the Nicolás Maduro regime. He ended up being the candidate after Chavismo itself denied the candidacy to María Corina Machado, the main candidate to win these elections.
He is an international analyst and earned a master’s degree in International Relations in the United States. He was a member of the international editorial board of the newspaper El Nacional and was also a member of the Democratic Unity Roundtable, which brought together Venezuela’s opposition parties.

He was also director of the Coordination and Strategic Planning Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1990 and 1991. He was then ambassador to Algeria between 1991 and 1993, during the mandates of Carlos Andrés Pérez and Ramón José Velásquez.
In Venezuela he was also Director General of International Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 1998. He was then ambassador to Argentina between 1998 and 2002, appointed by President Rafael Caldera, and served during the first years of Hugo Chávez’s government.
His main function, if he becomes President, would be to reduce the mega inflation that has devoured the Venezuelan currency. He also aims to raise wages in order to further reduce the depreciation of the currency.

We would like to congratulate the Venezuelan people on the historic day we are celebrating today.
We had a day with a massive participation that has not been seen in many years. We call on witnesses to remain in the centres until they receive the minutes… pic.twitter.com/LE13ICUeod
