A Portuguese national was arrested on the A16 near Porrentruy (JU) while transporting more than a ton of undeclared meat in his van.
It was during a mobile check on July 16 that employees of the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (OFDF) intercepted this vehicle at the Porrentruy-Ouest exit of the A16. During the check of the van registered in France, they discovered 1051 kg of meat preparations and 30.5 kg of tea packaged in sachets.
The driver, domiciled in France, declared that the goods had been imported from this country and introduced without declaring it by the border crossing of Réclère (JU), indicated Thursday the OFDF. As part of the investigation, he claimed to also have frozen meat in a depot in the Jura.
Pork and beef
On the spot the anti-fraud inspectors got their hands on 2230 kg of pork and beef stored in a cold room while the suspect had claimed that there were some 1500 kg. The meat was sequestered. The goods seized from the vehicle were destroyed.
The driver was released. The royalties due amount to several tens of thousands of francs. A “substantial” fine for violation of the customs law and the VAT law will also be imposed, said the OFDF.
