He had to do it on one condition. But he did not comply

But 10 years ago, it was introduced that convicted drunk drivers can be allowed to re-acquire their driving license already during the disqualification period, if they accept a so-called voluntary alcohol lock scheme.

You can only be allowed to do so if you did not cause personal injury or create a danger of it in connection with the driving for which you were convicted of drink driving.

Voluntary alcohol ban

  • The voluntary scheme means that you can re-acquire your driving license if you participate in an alcohol lock scheme.
  • You must drive with an alcohol lock until the disqualification period expires.
  • You can apply for permission to participate in the alcohol lock scheme at an optional Citizen Service in one of the country’s municipalities. The municipality sends your application to the Swedish Transport Agency, which makes a decision on the matter.
  • At any time during the disqualification period, you can register for the alcolock scheme and choose to drive with an alcolock for the remainder of the disqualification period. It is a condition for participation in the voluntary alcohol lock scheme that you have undergone a personal examination.
  • If you have caused personal injury or caused serious danger while driving, the voluntary alcolock system cannot be used. The Swedish Transport Agency makes this assessment when processing your application.
  • If you want to participate in the voluntary scheme, you must also be examined for possible alcohol abuse, as a condition for you to join the scheme. If you have an addiction, you must undergo treatment for it for at least a year, parallel to your participation in the alcohol lock scheme.

The 50-year-old Morsing resident had been granted the right to re-acquire his driver’s license during the suspension period on the condition that he had an alcohol lock installed in his car.

However, he did not have that in the car in which he was behind the wheel, when on Monday evening shortly following 20 was stopped by a patrol from the Central and West Jutland Police on Nørre Boulevard in Skive, says police assistant Niels Bach from the local police in Skive.

– We have now charged the gentleman in question with driving during the disqualification period, and he acknowledges that he has not complied with the conditions under which he might drive, says Niels Bach.
