“The young man went off the road with his scooter and collided with a traffic sign. He died instantly, ”explained the mayor of Gavre, who will meet, Saturday followingnoon, in the company of members of the police and the Red Cross, the youth movement in which the victim was active.
The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office has appointed a traffic expert to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident.
He had just passed his exam
The young man in question is Robin C. This 18-year-old young man was well known in Gavre since he was a scout leader but also active in the region’s football club. Today, a whole village is in shock at the news. As Het Laatste Nieuws explains, Robin had just passed his law exam and had gone to relax at the youth center.
On leaving, around 2:45 am, he was the victim of this terrible accident. “A tragic accident”, comments the mayor Denis Dierick. “Even if the public lighting was turned off (as is the case in many municipalities following the energy crisis), that does not explain this tragedy. Traffic signs there are equipped with reflectors. So we will never know exactly what caused it. He also confirms the great sadness there was at Robin’s football club. “They had an activity this followingnoon. I went there with victim assistance and people from the Red Cross. I can say that the consternation was great. I guess his football club and the scouts will organize a memorial moment for Robin, ”he concludes.
