ESIEA through a statement supported Giorgos Liagas after the attack launched against him by Alexis Kougias with his statement yesterday.
The Union of Editors stated that it will support the journalist of ANT1 “in any legal action he chooses to defend his rights” against the well-known criminal lawyer.
Earlier yesterday, Alexis Kougias issued a statement describing Giorgos Liagas as a “scumbag” and a “dangerous person”, while he called on the president of ANT1, Thodoris Kyriakou, to fire him.
“The Board of Directors of ESIEA once again disapproves of the unethical, disparaging and unacceptable characterizations of Mr. Alexis Kougias, which this time are directed against colleague Giorgos Liagas. The Board of Directors of ESIEA declares that it stands by the colleague in any legal action he chooses to defend his rights, against Mr. Kougia” the trade union of journalists of Athens states in its announcement.

The reaction of the Union of Editors was then commented on by Alexis Kougias who, in a statement through his law office, stated:
“I was informed of the announcement of the Board of Directors of ESIEA and I drew the following three conclusions:
1) For ESIEA’s Board of Directors to hold an extraordinary meeting and draw up an announcement about my position, it seems that my views have a very large social impact.
2) I note with great satisfaction the qualitative development of the members of ESIEA, which now considers Liagas an elite member and issues a statement in his favor.
3) I am surprised to find that ESIEA, in addition to being a trade union body for journalists, has also changed into a law firm and has lawyers, who are placed at the disposal of its protected members.
PS As for the paragraph that refers to the legal support of Liagas by ESIEA, the President of ESIEA, whom I recently examined as a lawyer for the Parapolitika group and their publisher Yannis Kurtakis as a defense witness in a difficult trial for the freedom of the press in Larissa , will have informed the other members of the Board of Directors of ESIEA that the Greek Courts and Greek Judges do not operate according to trade union criteria in the awarding of Justice, but they award justice and there things are infinitely more difficult than drafting a statement of trade unionists.
