The news that Iraqi businessman Nour Zuhair Muzaffar was involved in a traffic accident in Beirut’s Hadat district could have been considered normal, but ironically the accident occurred two days before he was due to appear before the Central Criminal Court. He will go on trial in Baghdad on Tuesday in what has been dubbed the “theft of the century.”
The “ambiguous” accident made news after many local and Arab media reported that Muzaffar was involved in a serious traffic accident in the Hadat region that nearly claimed his life and was taken to hospital. He suffered serious injuries to his spine, neck and ribs, as well as multiple bruises on his body, head and legs.
However, from the photos shown to Al-Muzaffar, it is clear that his injuries were minor and may have been aggravated, thus discrediting the suggestion that he was seriously injured, especially since there is information confirming that he traveled directly after the accident An unknown destination.
Iraqi media questioned the authenticity of the incident and said: “In the past few hours, all walks of life in Iraq have raised doubts about the authenticity of the incident in which Muzaffar was exposed in Lebanon, when he was supposed to be in Lebanon.” Iraq will be held this month His trial will take place on August 27th.
A video clip of an Iraqi journalist circulating in Lebanon said that “the accident was fabricated and Mudafar agreed with a Lebanese hospital”, noting that he went immediately after news of the accident broke but did not know his purpose land.
Muzaffar is accused of working with businessmen and influential figures to steal approximately $2.5 billion through fraud and forgery from tax deposits belonging to foreign companies and held in Iraqi government banks. During his escape from Iraq, some of those involved were arrested and some of the stolen property was recovered.
“Iraqi businessman Nour Zuhair left Lebanon for Turkey after an accident,” Al-Hadath sources said late on Saturday.
