HCSP Guidelines for Aeration, Ventilation, and Premises Hygiene in Epidemic Situations

2024-02-21 19:11:09

The HCSP updates the recommendations of its opinion of April 28, 2021 on aeration, ventilation, hygiene and use of premises, indicating those to be reactivated in an exceptional epidemic situation.

The manager of an establishment open to the public (ERP) or a professional premises with non-specific pollution must ensure that the ventilation system is functional and sized to achieve a maximum CO2 concentration of 800 ppm (plus 400 ppm per compared to the external concentration) during periods of occupation. This involves checking that the ventilation system can reach a minimum flow rate of 50 m3/h/occupant, without systematically using the CO2 sensor. If increasing flow rates is not possible or insufficient, reducing the gauge will make it possible to achieve this objective.

In the case of emerging viruses, or depending on the pathogen during an outbreak, a higher ventilation rate may be necessary to reduce aerosol disease transmission.

In ERP and professional premises without mechanical ventilation, or where mechanical ventilation does not allow a flow rate of 50 m3/h/occupant to be achieved, the HCSP recommends generalized monitoring of CO2 concentration with reliable sensors.

The hygiene, ventilation and ventilation measures defined during the Covid-19 crisis are reactivated and updated according to the recommendations of this opinion in the event of an epidemic situation linked to an infectious respiratory disease whose control is deemed necessary.
