The circovirus was first discovered in 1972. Symptoms were mainly observed in pigs and birds. However, it was considered harmless to humans. However, researchers are now sounding the alarm. In one Study Doctors Philippe Pérot and Jacques Fourgeaud from the renowned Pasteur Institute show that an illness can lead to serious consequences.
Virus discovered in patient with liver inflammation
Immunocompromised people in particular might be at risk from circoviruses (HCirV-1), as suggested by the case of a 61-year-old patient who developed chronic liver inflammation following a heart and lung transplant. “After ruling out common etiologies, we used next-generation metagenomic sequencing to analyze a liver biopsy sample and identified an unknown species of circovirus,” the scientists said in their study.
Due to the mysterious illness of their patient and the rare discovery, the team assumes that the circovirus must have been the reason for the severe liver inflammation. During their investigations, the researchers also found that this type of virus also had human pathological changes. This means that it has already adapted to humans, making transmission more likely. This was an unexpected discovery.
Infection has not yet been clarified
However, how the patient became infected remains unclear. The doctors think it is conceivable that she must have ingested the virus through food: “We speculate that HCirV-1 might be of animal origin, possibly from a food source in a similar way to the hepatitis E virus.”
PRC tests are now intended to clarify possible routes of infection. “The development of a specific antibody test will help decipher the ecology of the virus and better understand its transmission mechanisms,” said the researchers.
