Before making the difference much later, at the end of the evening, coach Petri Matikainen’s players were not always comfortable facing a weakened EV Zug (without Grégory Hofmann, in particular) but nonetheless tough.

HC Biel’s number 7 defender, Yannick Stampfli, was HC Biel’s rather unlikely first scorer. In ambush in front of the cage, the back took advantage of the undermining work of his captain, Gaëtan Haas, who managed, by scratching a little, to free a puck which had remained frozen under the pad of international goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni (18th, 0-1).

A Bienne break at the end of the match

The Biennois and goalkeeper Harri Säteri gave in when Lino Martschini, following recovering the puck in the neutral zone, ideally marked out Fabrice Herzog (23, 1-1). The Zealanders regained control midway through the match thanks to an unstoppable deflection from Fabio Hofer following a slapshot from the blue line by Luca Christen (30th, 2-1).

Never safe from a comeback from the Central Switzerland team, HC Bienne made the break at the end of the match. Jérémie Bärtschi, receiving a bright pass from defender Yanik Burren, was able to slide the puck out of reach of Genoni’s mitt (49th, 3-1), thereby cementing an important success for the HCB during the last match of the year 2023.

A trip to Lausanne

After a very disappointing first part of the season during which the new coach Petri Matikainen was not unanimous, HC Bienne (10th) will try in 2024 to leave the depths of the ranking. The Zealanders will resume competition on January 2 with a trip to Lausanne. They will then continue with a trip to Kloten (on the 5th) before receiving HC Ajoie on January 6.
