Haylou launched its new RS5 smart watch at the end of February 2024. The wearable became available with a focus on combining elegance and innovation, promising to “push the limits”.

Does he deliver all of this in practice? What highlights will the consumer find in this smartwatch? TudoCelular tested a unit of it in recent weeks and shows it to you in this complete analysis.

Design and construction

The Haylou RS5 has a design that feels more premium than the category it fits into. This is because it has a rectangular case with curved edges, which makes it look similar to an Apple Watch.

It has a metal construction on the frame, with a plastic back. IP68 certification is also present, to guarantee resistance once morest dust and liquids. Something always welcome. The watch is quite light and comfortable to wear for a long time, thanks to its thickness of 10.5 mm and its weight of 51 grams.

The box has a single button on the right side, which is used to unlock the screen and enter the system options menu. It also functions as a rotating crown, to change dials more easily.

The back comes with sensors for measuring health and physical activity, as well as two magnetic pins, where the charger is attached. Further below, there is an inscription with the brand’s logo.

This smartwatch comes with an adjustable silicone strap, which is quite comfortable despite not being very durable. In the box, you will find an alternative fabric strap with velcro. So, you can choose the one you like best to use. Swapping is easy using the pins present on the back of the wearable.

In addition to the bracelets and the watch itself, the very compact packaging also comes with the user manual and the charging cable, without a built-in plug adapter.

I am a body

The watch has a 2.01-inch AMOLED screen. You will find a high brightness level, which makes viewing good even on sunny days. The colors are pleasing, as is the wide viewing angle.

Haylou has a refresh rate of 60 Hz, with good navigation and general experience fluidity, in addition to a resolution of 410 x 502 pixels, which does not disappoint in terms of image definition.

The manufacturer also inserted a speaker positioned at the bottom of the left side. With it, you can play music from your cell phone directly on the watch, as well as listen to alarms set on the wearable and use it for Bluetooth calls.

Despite not having a maximum volume comparable to a cell phone, the sound power was above average. Furthermore, the quality is decent and very clear for smartwatch audio.

System and connectivity

In the same way that you can find on smart bracelets and more basic watches, the RS5 has a proprietary system without an application store. In other words, you will only be able to use the tools that are installed at the factory. Don’t expect GPS or NFC support on this wearable either.

Even so, it has functions such as a flashlight, if you need a light in the dark quickly; integrated calculator; the aforementioned alarm; and time selections with the stopwatch and timer.

The device also allows you to find out information regarding the weather, control the music playing and make calls, when connected to your smartphone. And speaking of connection, it supports Bluetooth 5.2, with good stability and range.

You can access resources by swiping to the left, with dedicated cards, or the most used ones through the side menu when you swipe to the right. The top menu still allows you to activate some quick items or access settings, while the bottom menu accesses your cell phone’s notifications, but without the possibility of a quick response.

The interface is translated into Portuguese, but you will not always see the correct words in the language. Something that may be fixed through a future software update.

Another feature present in this model is the Always-on Display. But it is only used to check the clock and date, without more important information being easily accessible. You can also unlock the screen with a turn of the wrist. The agility is good, but you can’t lock the display once more when turning in the opposite direction.

The watch has four displays integrated into the system, with different focuses, whether displaying the battery, heart rate or steps. They are more complementary than customizable. The user can download other options through the Haylou Fun app, available for download from the Google Play Store. There you will have another 150 watchface options to choose from.

And speaking of the app, it gives you a complete report of your health and physical activity information, as well as details regarding your sleep. You can also use it to update the watch’s firmware or check the battery level.

Health and physical activities

The Haylou RS5 comes with sensors that allow you to constantly monitor heartbeats and measure blood saturation, in addition to knowing the user’s stress level, in a function called “Pressure”. But here it is worth not confusing it with blood pressure, which is not checked on this watch.

One point we noticed is the sensitivity of the heart rate sensor. The component is often active outside the wrist, when there is an object on top of it, including the bracelet itself. Just put it back on your wrist and take it off, and the sensor will stop this erroneous measurement.

There is also sleep tracking here, with differentiation by phases. We noticed a certain inaccuracy when identifying the sleep period, with nights without measurement, as we had already noticed with the Haylou Watch R8.

For women, the watch offers menstrual cycle monitoring, with data directly in the cell phone app. An important feature to come in a more affordable device like this.

The Haylou RS5 also measures the user’s steps at all times, recording it along with other physical activities in a section called “Daily exercise”. Speaking of the fitness area, there are more than 150 sports to follow.

You can find alternatives such as running, walking, cycling and hiking, or choose more generic training. The information displayed includes heart rate, which is classified into categories according to the frequency per minute, exercise time and the amount of calories lost.

Battery

Haylou has included a battery with a capacity of 300 mAh in this device. The manufacturer informs that it is possible to use up to 20 days in standby, up to 9 days in typical use and up to 6 days with Always-on Display enabled. And what did we see in practice?

We tested the watch with heart rate tracking and notifications constantly on, in addition to active sleep monitoring every night. The result was a total duration of 10 days on one charge. A time that we consider satisfactory due to the resources present in it.

When we go to charge, the process can be done using the cable with magnetic attachment, which comes in the packaging. According to the manufacturer, the wearable takes three hours to return to 100%. Is this really the time we saw?

We used a 15 W cell phone adapter to measure the recharge time. In total, we saw the RS5 complete the task in 2 hours and 13 minutes. An acceptable delay, in relation to what it provides in terms of autonomy, and shorter than what the company itself promises.

Final considerations

The Haylou RS5 is a basic smart watch, which can even be classified as a bracelet, as it does not come with a complete system with app installation and other factory features.

The design is its positive point. Having a box in a format that looks like a more expensive smartwatch, as well as the comfort of wearing for a prolonged period and the presence of another bracelet in the box make this model a satisfactory alternative.

Another positive point is the screen. The brightness is satisfactory, in addition to the colors and the good viewing angle. Its fluidity is pleasing and the presence of an integrated sound that is above average complements the multimedia experience here well.

The battery is another pleasant surprise. You may go for more than a week without charging your watch unit, even with all measurements enabled and notifications received.

As the main negative points of this wearable, we highlight the errors in the Portuguese translation of the interface, the flaws in heart rate measurements and the inaccuracy in sleep tracking.

System with translation errorsHalf Inaccurate sleep monitoring

Haylou launched the RS5 on the international market for a price of around R$240, not counting import taxes. Still, a good value for money for those who want a basic wearable, with a pleasant design and long autonomy, without major demands on their health.

And what options do we have in national retail? The Galaxy Fit 3 is a strong competitor. It also flirts between a bracelet and a smart watch, in addition to having greater precision in health measurements. It only loses in autonomy to Haylou’s rival.

The Huawei Watch Fit Special Edition is one of the best cost-benefit smartwatches today. It also lasts for a week and has an AMOLED screen, with the advantages of 5 ATM certification and quick responses to messages.

Do you think the RS5 might be one of the best smartwatch options that combines elegance and innovation? What features did you like most regarding it? Comment everything in the space below.
