Director Hayao Miyazaki’s feature film “How Do You Want to Live” following 9 years won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film (C) 2023 Studio Ghibli
On March 11, the 96th Academy Awards ceremony was held in Hollywood, USA. “How Do You Want to Live” directed by Hayao Miyazaki won the Best Animated Feature Award. This is the second time in 20 years that a Japanese film has won the Animation Feature Film Award since “The Hidden Girl” in 2003.
“How Do You Want to Live” defeated nominated rivals such as Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Across the Universe” and Walt Disney Company’s “Elemental City” to win the award.
Hayao Miyazaki, 83, announced his withdrawal from feature-length production in 2013, but later withdrew the preface and produced the work. The protagonist is a young man who was evacuated during the war due to the death of his biological mother. He accidentally enters a different world following meeting a heron.
The English film is titled “The Boy and the Heron” and will be released in North America in December 2023. It topped the box office rankings on the first weekend, setting a new high in the history of Ghibli movies.
It has received high praise overseas. In 2024, it won the American Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and the American Annie Award, known as the Oscars of the animation industry, for Best Storyboarding and Best Character Animation.
Director Hayao Miyazaki in 2013
During a panel discussion on March 2 before the Oscars, a video of a conversation between director Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki was released. When asked if the film was autobiographical, Miyazaki said “No, but it does exist in my heart. I think so.”
Regarding the work that took 7 years to complete, Hayao Miyazaki said with a smile, “I thought this movie would never be finished. (It was able to be completed) because of the continuous flow of money.” On March 10, Studio Ghibli President Hiroyuki Fukuda also said in Los Angeles, “We will not set a development cycle of 2 to 3 years as usual, but will allow them to freely pursue hand-drawn animation.”
In 2014, Miyazaki also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy Awards.
