Hawaii: 60-year-old woman missing after shark attack

A 60-year-old woman has been missing since December 8th. She and her husband went snorkeling off South Maui, an island of Hawaii. There the woman was attacked by a shark. The husband immediately called the emergency services. He explained: “Together we were able to shake off the shark. Then we swam back to the beach. I got there, but my wife didn’t.”

The Hawaiian authorities declined to provide any further information as the investigation is ongoing.

Witnesses found the woman’s clothes on the beach

Witnesses found a snorkel and pieces of a bathing suit 50 meters off the beach where the couple entered the water. Commissioner of Inquiry Dan Dennison made the following statement at a press conference. “Of all the islands in Hawaii, Maui has the tallest attack rate of sharks.”

Warning signs are now posted on the beach where the shark attack took place. The Maui Fire Department, the US Marine Police and many other groups participated in the search for the woman. A tiger shark has since been spotted off the beach, although it is not clear if it was responsible for attacking the woman. On Friday followingnoon, the water police stopped the search because they might not find any further information on the whereregardings of the woman.
