having inflammatory bowel disease would increase the risks

A team of Swedish researchers has just shown, through a vast study, that patients suffering from chronic inflammatory bowel disease (MICI) might be more exposed to a risk of having a stroke and in particular a ischemic stroke.

Namely, ischemic stroke occurs when an artery in the brain supplying blood rich in oxygen and nutrients becomes clogged.

Stroke risk may be increased when you have inflammatory bowel disease

First, the data from 85 006 patients have been analyzed. All had IBD (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). Then the researchers paired each patient with up to five people of the same age and sex. A total of 406,987 people took part in the study.

3720 stroke were noted in the group of people with IBD, approximately 12 years following the start of the study. 15,599 people without IBD had a stroke. This represents a risk of 0.32% in the group of people with IBD and 0.27% in the other group.

The difference is admittedly minimal. But when the researchers looked for other factors capable of influencing stroke risk such as the presence of heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity, they found that people with IBD were 13% more likely to have a stroke than those without this type of disease.

What to take away from this study?

In order to conclude the study, the researchers specify that “Patients with IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) had an increased risk of stroke, in particular ischemic events, regardless of the IBD subtype. The excess of risk persisted even 25 years following diagnosis. These results highlight the need for clinical vigilance regarding the long-term excessive risk of cerebrovascular events in patients with IBD. »
