In Baldur’s Gate III, your character is silent during almost the entire adventure in order to reinforce immersion. However, he sometimes utters a few words on rare occasions and it is even possible to hear him during dialogues. Explanations.
Tav the taciturns
Baldur’s Gate III, like any good self-respecting C-RPG, plays the immersion card to the fullest. The idea is to completely immerse you in the epic story of the game by making you play a tailor-made character, which you will have previously created according to your tastes and desires.
To do this, you have the choice between different customization parameters in order to make a character that resembles you, or not, the choice is yours. In fact, the customization menu is limited, but comprehensive enough to create a character in your image. You can change many traits, including voice. Except that once in the game, your character remains silent throughout the entire game, apart from certain anecdotal moments with predefined sentences.
The main character’s dialogues are not dubbed. A conscious choice by Larian to reinforce everyone’s immersion. However, this choice would have been debated during the development of Baldur’s Gate III and it is even possible to find traces of dubbing, as we can see in the video below.
What if BG3 had been entirely dubbed?
As shown in the previous video, our character is able to speak. This is very rare and it is not certain that here it is a voluntary choice on Larian’s part, but we cannot help but wonder what the game would have been like if the main character had a completely different voice. throughout the game, in the manner of Cyberpunk 2077 for example, whose protagonist, V, is particularly talkative.
In fact, originally, Larian Studios would have wanted the main character to be fully voiced. In any case, this is what several players say, some of whom would have discussed with moderators who would have confirmed the studio’s initial desire. Nothing has been officially confirmed by the studio. We will therefore never really know if Tav might have received the gift of speech or not. That being said, this “absence” of dubbing detracts absolutely nothing from the quality of Baldur’s Gate III, which remains an undeniable must-play.
