THE PHENOMENON of checking khodam online on social media has gone viral. Many people are scrambling to write their names in the comments column when the reader is livethen it will be ‘guessed’ what khodam resides in the body of the owner of that name.
Unair Anthropology Lecturer Biandro Wisnuyana, S.Ant., MA, said the emergence of the phenomenon was just an expression of the public’s entertainment media. “This is just have fun “Just,” said Biandro as reported on the official Unair website, Monday (1/7).
Checking for khodam online also went viral because Indonesian people really like mystical things and cocoklogi (logical compatibility). Cocoklogi is considered interesting because it is logically correct, but does not have strong evidence from empirical or historical data.
Meaning
Biandro added, since classical times, Indonesian or Nusantara society has believed in supernatural things, such as khodam. In the past, people believed that khodam were invisible entities that had a reciprocal relationship through agreements with humans. They also believed that there were two ways to obtain khodam, namely through magical ‘knowledge’ and heredity.
The art of Gatotkaca puppetry is also evidence of the belief in khodam in ancient society. The story of the war between Gatotkaca and Brajadenta and Brajamusti in the overthrow of the throne of the Pringgadani Kingdom. The souls of both then ‘entered’ the right and left hands of Gatotkaca.

Biandro also revealed that khodam can be either human or animal. For example, the classic story of Prabu Siliwangi, which people believe has a khodam in the form of a white tiger. People believe that the khodam that resides has certain characteristics that are reflected in the human.
“When someone faces or communicates with the person who owns the khodam, they will be reluctant and then they will submit,” he said.
However, currently khodam has changed its meaning. In the past, people considered Khodam as magical, now it is only a medium of entertainment through online khodam checks.

Positive and negative impacts
The change in the meaning of khodam in today’s society has made the fear or worry regarding the supernatural disappear and instead become a medium of entertainment. The negative impacts that can arise for children to teenagers are over self confidence or are too confident with the khodam they have.
When their khodam is ‘good’ or ‘cool’, people feel like they can do anything they want. It can also create a disturbing perspective for people who truly believe in khodam.
“Please be euphoric with this phenomenon, but do not make this a reference to believe in doing something. Because once once more this is entertainment and the validity related to empirical and historical data still needs to be questioned,” concluded Biandro. (M-3)
