Has Egypt recorded any cases of monkeypox recently? The Ministry of Health clarifies

In a telephone statement to Sada El Balad channel, Hossam Abdel Ghaffar confirmed that no cases of infection or suspicion of “monkeypox” have been detected in Egypt, as well as in neighboring countries, based on continuous communication with the coordinators of international regulations in the World Health Organization.

Abdel Ghaffar explained that since the World Health Organization declared “monkeypox” a global health emergency that calls for concern, the Ministry of Health has been working intensively through the Preventive Medicine Sector to activate cases of anticipation through land, sea and air ports.

The same spokesman pointed out that the Ministry of Health has also renewed the guide for “monkeypox” in line with new developments, whether in the presence of new strains, or the presence of transmission mechanisms, such as the method of early detection, diagnosis of treatment and training doctors on it, whether at entry points or even surveillance sites in all governorates.

Last Wednesday, the World Health Organization declared the monkeypox epidemic in Africa a public health emergency of international concern.

Following this announcement, the Egyptian Ministry of Health noted that a number of important measures have been taken at ports, quarantine, and all sectors of the ministry to prevent the entry of any cases or monitor them immediately upon their discovery. The protocol authorized the use of a drug called “tecovirimat,” which was developed for smallpox by the European Medical Association for Monkeypox in 2022.

The Ministry of Health and Population, represented by the Preventive Medicine Sector, called on all health directorates and bodies affiliated with the Ministry to raise educational awareness regarding monkeypox.

It is worth noting that the Russian Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection (Rospotrebnadzor) announced that the Russian Vector Scientific Research Center has a vaccine to prevent “monkeypox.”
