The first strawberries were harvested last week, and market tour leaves. La Baule, Pornichet, Le Croisic. The strawberry has arrived and with it the smell of sun and spring. But strawberries in March ? Where do they come from and how are they produced?

“They are juicy, sweet and like all garriguettes, a little tangy”. Xavier Burban who manages the company with his brother for 17 years is very satisfied with the quality of his strawberries this year. For the quantity? “that’s more random, it’s Mother Nature who decides”. The principle of the greenhouse However, it allows production to be advanced** and to protect once morest rain.

No organic label

Car si Burban does not have the organic label, its strawberries do not grow in the ground but in hanging gardens, “no question of using chemicals” promise the two brothers. The strawberries are also planted in natural peat. Another imperative: they are strawberries sold locally within hours of picking.

“We bring in bumblebees at the start of winter for pollination and we treat with natural products to keep pests away”. Stéphane Burban recalls that it is on average per year 150 tonnes of strawberries which are produced on these seven hectares of greenhouse, “the equivalent of seven football fields”. At the height of the season, there are around fifty employees.

Count twenty euros per kilo, ten euros for two trays. “60% of the price is used to pay for labor”.
