WASHINGTON – US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller came under fire from journalists during a press conference, who accused the United States of complicity in Israeli violations in Gaza.
The criticism came in the context of comparisons between the rapid American response to Russian attacks in Ukraine, and the disparity in the response to Israeli attacks in Gaza.
During the briefing, Miller took sharp questions regarding the quick conclusions the United States reached regarding the Russian attack on a hospital in Kyiv, and the speed with which it identified who was responsible. Asked regarding the speed, Miller said, “Nobody else is attacking Ukraine, so it’s very clear that it came from Russia.”
Comparisons with Gaza
Journalists pointed to the contradictions in the American response, pointing to Israeli attacks on hospitals and facilities in Gaza, sometimes using American weapons. “Why can’t you say definitively what happened in those cases?” one journalist asked.
Accusations of collusion
Journalists accused the US government of complicity in Israeli violations, citing reports by the United Nations and aid organizations that Israel is using starvation as a tool of war in Gaza. They noted the resignation of 12 US government employees in protest of this complicity.
American response
Miller defended the US position, saying: “We will continue to work day and night to get humanitarian aid in, and we recognize all the obstacles and work to overcome them.” He added: “The United States remains the largest funder of the Israeli military, but we are committed to ensuring that the flow of humanitarian aid is not obstructed during the war.”
Fears of losing legitimacy
Journalists have expressed concerns that the United States is losing international legitimacy because of its stance toward Israel and the Palestinians, accusing the government of hypocrisy in supporting human rights in certain areas while ignoring them in Palestine.
Criticism of US support for Israel continues to mount amid increasing reports of humanitarian abuses in Gaza, putting the US State Department on the defensive in the face of world public opinion.
