Game news Harry Potter Quidditch Champions: Should we be worried?
Share :
Without warning, Warner has decided to unveil a new game in the Harry Potter universe. After Hogwarts Legacy, it will soon be the turn of Harry Potter Quidditch Champions to enchant players. But is he really capable of it?
Unbroken Studios pour Harry Potter : Quidditch Champions
You have certainly seen the information pass: Warner Bros. announced a game centered on Quidditch, responding to the evocative name of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and developed by Unbroken Studios. What is the concept ? Well allow you to take part in Quidditch matches through a competitive multiplayer game that will be available on PC and consoles (not yet specified). To do this, you will be able to create and customize your own champions. The game is currently in the testing phase with limited participation and we have not seen any gameplay images. No information regarding the output window either. For the moment, it will be enough to make do with a few captures and a video presentation. Of course, it’s intriguing. Especially since the expectation is great for fans of the universe, but also new players who have hooked on the magical world following the release of Hogwarts Legacy: Hogwarts Legacy. Quidditch was indeed not present in the game, to the chagrin of some.
Suffice to say that there are people who count a lot on Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. The magical sport has not had the right to an adaptation since 2003. At the time, it was EA Games who took on this heavy task. But for this new title, a question arises: Does Unbroken Studios have the shoulders? Because yes, it is not a well-known studio. Currently, its teams are spinning a hand on the development of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which does not really seem to delight the public at the moment. Other games on his list? Fantastic Plastic Squad and Fractured Lands. The advantage is that they are both multiplayer games. The studio therefore already has good experience at this level. The downside is that these titles clearly did not make an impression. They weren’t even very well received by critics and gamers. Suffice to say that tackling such a big project, which will continue even following the game’s release, may seem like a lot for such a small studio.
But it is very difficult to assess the potential of such a little-known studio. When Hogwarts Legacy was announced, the same question arose. The choice of Avalanche Software (Disney Infinity…) as well as the absence of big names in the industry for such a large license gave good reason to worry. But the studio rose to the challenge with flying colors, in particular thanks to the support of Warner Bros., but also thanks to a team of enthusiasts and quality developers. In a way, Avalanche Software has therefore proven that in such cases, it is pointless to judge a book by its cover. But that doesn’t mean there’s no reason to worry regarding Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions…
Do we really want a Quidditch game?
So yes, in the Harry Potter universe, Quidditch has a special aura. Everyone loves this flying sport and dreams of becoming the new star catcher. So much so that at the announcement of his absence in Hogwarts Legacy, many players immediately rebelled. Until now, they fell back on the hope of seeing a potential Quidditch DLC arrive later. Today, we understand better why this was obviously not planned. We might logically have expected cries of joy, but the reactions were rather mixed in the face of the announcement of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. Some would have obviously preferred a DLC rather than a separate game. And that’s not really surprising.
Because if Quidditch seems to be an incredible sport on paper, in game it is often another pair of sleeves. Perhaps you have fond memories of the 2003 game, Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup. But if the game was all in all quite nice, it really wasn’t free from flaws. No, this is not the perfect Quidditch game that we would like to remember, but a title with hazardous handling, rather poor content and particularly unbalanced. So much so that we quickly had the impression of having made the rounds, unless you were an extreme completionist, and that the joy of the first moments faded following a few hours. In the end, the best Quidditch games are almost the mini-games included in the adaptations of the books.
If Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will obviously not play in the same court (as a multiplayer and competitive game), it risks suffering the full brunt of the same limits. Because quite simply, Quidditch is not such a simple game to adapt into a video game. Just putting together a flight system that is not too difficult to handle while providing real sensations is a huge job. We must add to this the balancing, whether at the level of attack, defense but also of the different positions. And of course, it is necessary to adapt the rules to make it a fun game to play. As you will have understood, the task is colossal.
And even if Unbroken Studios succeeds in this part, nothing says that the game will last over time. Because that’s the whole point of this kind of titles: to maintain the interest of the players. The problem is that with titles as effective as Rocket League or Fortnite, it’s difficult to win the hearts of players, even with gameplay that works. Roller Champions, Knockout City… Many of them have paid the price. Once the craze has passed, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions might well suffer the same fate. And when you find yourself with bots in your team (which should a priori require 7 players), not sure that the game will continue to please you. Of course, this is not what we want in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions but, as you will have understood, the task promises to be difficult. In the end, maybe a DLC would have been less risky… In any case, we clearly shouldn’t declare victory too quickly.
