England manager Gareth Southgate is perplexed and angry that Harry Maguire is the target of insults.

The Manchester United defender was jeered by Scottish fans after coming on as a substitute at half-time in the Three Lions’ impressive 3-1 win at Hampden Park, in a friendly match marking the 150th anniversary of the first meeting between the two nations.

The 30-year-old has been a tower of strength for England during a successful period under Southgate and the manager has not hesitated to give his opinion on the criticism he has received. of his trusted people, who won 59 caps and was a key part of the teams that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.

The centre-back has remained an undisputed starter as the Three Lions look to justify their status as favorites for next year’s European Championship.

Premier League squad of 25 players confirmed

“I have never known a player treated like he is”

Southgate said.

“He was an absolute pillar for us in the second most successful England team in decades – he was a key part of that success.”

“I spoke about the importance of our senior players, and he played a crucial role in that.”

“Every time he steps on the field, the resilience he shows is absolutely incredible. He’s a top player, we’re all with him and our fans have been brilliant with him.”

Maguire took the captain’s armband when Harry Kane, another goalscorer, was replaced, after United player Marcus Rashford posed a constant threat to the Scottish defense and was involved in the set-up for the first two goals.

Southgate praised the way the Scottish fans stood behind their man, as the Reds crowd does whenever our players are criticized, as has been the case with David Beckham, Phil Neville and Wayne Rooney in the past when they represented their country.

“From a Scottish supporters’ point of view, I understand”

, agreed the former Middlesbrough manager. “I have absolutely no complaints about what they did.”

“But this is the consequence of ridiculous treatment of him over a long period of time. It’s a joke. Not by Scottish fans, but by our own commentators, pundits and others. They created something beyond anything I’ve ever seen.”

“I think our fans understood: Okay, maybe there’s a little heat from our own fans, but we’re not going to let other people take it out on him.”
