WASHINGTON. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has publicly admitted her defeat in the presidential election to Republican Donald Trump.
“We have to accept the result of this election,” the 60-year-old said during an appearance in front of supporters in the capital Washington, promising to ensure a peaceful transfer of power. According to consistent media reports, the US Vice President had previously telephoned Trump to congratulate him on his election victory.
A basic principle of US democracy is: “If we lose an election, we accept the result.” This distinguishes a democracy from a monarchy or tyranny. At the same time, Harris emphasized that even if she accepts her election defeat, she will never give up the fight that drove her election campaign – such as the fight for freedom.

});“Don’t be desperate”
Harris called on her supporters not to despair and not to lose heart. “Don’t despair. This is not the time to sit back. It’s time to roll up your sleeves.” Harris said: “I know that many people feel that we are entering a dark time.” But stars can only be seen in the dark. It is now up to America to fill the sky with stars.

Her heart is full of gratitude, trust, love and determination, Harris continued. “The result of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for,” she stressed. “But the light that America promises will always shine bright as long as we never give up. And as long as we keep fighting.” Harris promised to ensure a peaceful transfer of power. She also mentioned that a president must be there for all Americans. But the fight for democracy and the rule of law will continue.

Harris experienced a debacle on election night. Trump made an unexpectedly clear breakthrough. Long before the last votes were counted, it was clear that the Republican would move back into the White House. It is a historic comeback for the now 78-year-old ex-president.
Harris originally wanted to appear in front of her supporters on election night at an election party on the grounds of Howard University. However, she canceled this after it became clear that Republican Donald Trump had been able to prevail in crucial states.
