Harris chooses Minnesota Governor Walz as running mate

Tim Walz will be her candidate for the vice-presidential post, US media reported on Tuesday. The 60-year-old former teacher has been at the helm of the state of 5.7 million inhabitants since 2019. He is considered a politician who, with his simple language, also finds access to voters without academic education.

Liberal positions on abortion and cannabis

At the same time, the former National Guardsman and football coach holds liberal positions on abortion and cannabis. Walz has been married to his wife Gwen for 30 years and is the father of two children.

The Midwestern state of Minnesota is not among the narrow circle of states that will decide the election, but Walz help the presidential candidate to reach a wider range of voters in the region’s swing states such as Wisconsin and Michigan and thus win these states. The presidential election will take place on November 5th.

Multi-day tour through the swing states

Other possible vice presidential candidates included Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, and Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona. Harris plans to campaign with her running mate on Tuesday evening in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After that, they will tour the particularly contested and decisive states – so-called swing states – for several days.

Walz recently caused a stir because he described the right-wing populist Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance as “weird”. He is considered the inventor of this label, which has spread nationwide and which Harris has also frequently used for her rival since then.
