The former president and Republican candidate for the upcoming election visited Arlington Military Cemetery, near Washington, on Monday to participate in a ceremony honoring the 13 soldiers killed during the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021.
During that visit, an altercation occurred between members of Trump’s team, who attempted to take photos of the event, and members of the Cemetery staff, Arlington Military Cemetery management announced Wednesday.
The Republican candidate’s entourage, which continues to criticize Democrats for the chaotic American withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, responded with a press release emphasizing that the soldiers’ families had given permission for the photos to be taken.
The US military confirmed Thursday that a worker at Arlington Cemetery was “abruptly pushed back” during Trump’s visit as she tried to enforce a federal law banning all political activity at the cemetery.
“This was an unfortunate incident and it is also unfortunate that the (Cemetery) worker and her professionalism were unreasonably questioned,” a US military spokesman said in a statement.
Harris criticized Trump’s stance today, saying Arlington Cemetery is “no place to do politics.”
“If there’s one thing we as Americans can all agree on, it’s that our veterans, military families, and members of the armed forces should be honored, never disparaged, and treated with nothing less than the utmost respect and our gratitude,” Harris noted in her post.
“It is my belief that a person incapable of fulfilling this simple and sacred duty should never again become president of the United States of America,” he added.
