The topic came up when Harris, who owns guns himself, talked about gun laws.
– I probably shouldn’t have said that. But my staff will take care of that later,” said a laughing Harris afterward.
Her opponent Donald Trump is in favor of fewer restrictions on guns and ammunition, while Harris wants to ban assault weapons and introduce stricter background checks on gun buyers.
She also wants to open laws that allow state courts to order the temporary confiscation of guns from people deemed dangerous.
Harris is nevertheless clear that she supports the right to keep and bear arms, which is enshrined in the US Constitution.
The vice president’s actions come as concerns about political violence have been heightened in the United States after Trump was nearly killed in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania this summer and then targeted again in an alleged assassination attempt in Florida last week.
Harris also mentioned in the 2019 election campaign that she owns guns, and again in the debate against Trump last week. The move may appear to be an attempt to attract more conservative voters.
One-third of Americans own guns, and about two-thirds support stricter gun laws. Nearly 90 percent support laws that prevent the mentally ill from obtaining guns, according to Pew Research.
