Turning finances Around:‍ Detroit Mom Finds ⁤Success Through Financial Literacy Program

The new year often brings resolutions focused on personal improvement, and for many, that ⁣includes tackling financial challenges. Paying down debt,⁣ saving for ‌a home, or simply gaining control of spending can feel ‍overwhelming. However, one Detroit mother,Latoya Kelly, discovered a program that ⁤empowered her to navigate ⁢these difficulties and ‍achieve financial stability.

Latoya, a single mother of⁣ three, faced a particularly ⁢tough situation when she lost‍ her job in October. Her⁤ credit ‌score hovered around 580, burdened by credit card debt and outstanding collections. “So, my credit score was about 580.⁣ I did have some debt with two credit‍ cards and then also some collections ‌from accounts,” she shared.

The financial strain took a toll.‍ “Very stressful,” Latoya admitted, describing the constant worry of⁣ making ends meet. Her struggles‌ extended to housing, as repeated applications were met‌ with rejection.

A turning point arrived‌ when a relative recommended Gesher Human Services’ HarMoney program, a comprehensive financial literacy initiative. Through HarMoney,Latoya gained ‌valuable insights and practical strategies to manage her finances effectively.”One of the things‌ that they taught me⁢ was to prioritize my needs versus my wants,” she explained, highlighting a crucial lesson learned.

LatoyaS newfound awareness extended ‍to identifying unneeded spending habits. “When ⁢I was out dropping my kids off at school, I would promptly go to get a‍ coffee or a frappé. And that right⁣ ther, doing‌ that every day, that’s‍ costly!” she‌ realized, ⁢demonstrating how small, seemingly insignificant expenses can accumulate.

Gesher Human Services ⁤continues to empower individuals like‍ Latoya through its HarMoney ‌program, offering ⁣a free, virtual class once a ‍week for six weeks,⁣ starting in February. Their commitment to providing accessible financial education underscores the importance of equipping individuals with the⁣ tools to achieve⁤ financial well-being.
