Friends of the late political writer Luqman Selim commemorated the first anniversary of his assassination in the south, and held a spontaneous gathering in the garden of Darat Mohsen Selim – Haret Hreik, in the presence of US Ambassador Dorothy Shea, French Ambassador Anne Greu, British Ambassador Ian Collard and a representative of the German ambassador.

In her speech, Ambassador Greu affirmed that “justice must be achieved and the truth must be revealed transparently and independently,” stressing that “France will continue to honor the memory of Luqman Selim and support his work and the work of all those who struggle once morest impunity and for justice, peace and freedom in Lebanon.”

On her part, Ambassador Shea said: “All of us here were affected by his work. Luqman advocated the rule of law. He was a fighter for freedom of expression, democracy and civic participation, never intimidated by repeated threats once morest him. In his lifetime, he fought for justice and accountability. And in his death, he deserves these things. Commemorating the first anniversary of his assassination is a very sad occasion for all of us, and what is most disturbing is to see that justice has not yet been served and there is no accountability yet.” She added: “His assassination was not only an attack on a person, but also an attack on Lebanon itself. The use of threats and intimidation to undermine the rule of law and silence political discourse and dissent remains unacceptable,” she said, noting that “in the wake of Luqman’s assassination, malicious actors in Lebanon have tried to weaken, distort and delegitimize Lebanese civil society institutions and NGOs, but their attacks cannot be prevented.” The boldness of telling the truth is strength. To you who carry the legacy of Luqman Saleem, your freedom of expression and your freedom of participation in a democratic society constitutes the strongest answer to those who resort to cowardly political violence. She concluded: “Now, more than ever, as we approach the elections and the Lebanese people are suffering from crises, we must all work to adhere to the principles of justice and accountability that Luqman was working for.”

Prime Minister Saad Hariri tweeted the anniversary of the assassination of activist Salim, on Twitter, writing: “We will not forget.”

Sheikh Bahaa Hariri demanded “truth and justice for the writer and political activist Luqman Selim.” For the soul of Salim and all the righteous martyrs who fell on the altar of this country in order to liberate it from the domination of corruption and guardianship, mercy and safety.”
