There are 150 fire victims who have been accommodated to date in the air-conditioned halls of the OAKA, which were opened from the first moment the fire broke out on August 11, following the consultation of the regional governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalia, with the deputy minister of sports, Yiannis Vroutsis, and the administration of the Athens Olympic Sports Center.
During the stay at OAKA and in good cooperation with the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Sofia Zaharakis, the fire victims who were at the site had at their disposal basic support services (e.g. food, water and places to rest), as well as and health care where required.
The contribution of non-governmental organizations, such as the Hellenic Red Cross, Doctors of the World Greece, UNICEF, Humanity Greece, Iasis and METAdrasis, as well as the Hellenic Guidance Corps, was also valuable. These organizations contributed with medical, humanitarian and psychosocial support, ensuring the provision of comprehensive assistance to all guests. At the same time, the National Public Health Organization (EODY), from the first moment, sent pharmaceutical material and specialized personnel to cover the needs of the guests.
In addition, 35 patients, aged 25 to 93, from the neuropsychiatric hospital based in Penteli were temporarily transferred to the facilities of the Olympic Stadium. These patients, after their short stay at OAKA and in consultation with the Deputy Minister of Health, Dimitris Vartzopoulos, were taken to a central hotel in Athens.
By order of Mr. Hardalia to the General Directorate of Public Health and Social Care of the Attica Region (Department of Social Services – Social Work) a team was then sent to the hotel to provide assistance to the visiting patients.
In his statement, the governor of Attica emphasizes the importance of the immediate mobilization and cooperation of all involved bodies, noting that: “In a period when the conditions are extremely difficult, the Attica Region will continue to stand by the side of all those affected by the fire, providing the maximum support possible. The immediate response and the substantial cooperation between the agencies prove the commitment to the protection and well-being of the citizens of the basin”.
