The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Sunday because he was not free to publicly detail personnel movements.

Aside from the Chargers, Atlanta, Carolina, Las Vegas, Seattle, Tennessee, and Washington have vacancies.

Harbaugh, who previously coached in the NFL, has a prior connection to the Chargers and the Spanos family as owners. He played on the team from 1999-2000 before retiring following the 2021 season.

Harbaugh, 60, has been at Michigan for nine seasons, and has an 86-25 record. Harbaugh’s time at his alma mater has been longer than expected following signing in 2015. He spent three seasons at the University of San Diego (2004-06), four at Stanford (2007-10), and another four with the San Francisco 49ers (2010-14).

Michigan presented Harbaugh with a 10-year contract offer worth $125 million that included a clause that he might not accept offers from the NFL during the current offseason.
