EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — If Colin Kaepernick wanted to join the Los Angeles Chargers, he would have to wait until next year at the earliest.
That will only happen if he wants to be part of head coach Jim Harbaugh’s team of collaborators.
“I love Colin, but he’s not going to be on this year’s coaching staff. And he’s not going to be on the roster,” Harbaugh stressed after Thursday’s practice.
Harbaugh, who coached Kaepernick in San Francisco from 2011-14, told USA TODAY Sports this week that shortly after he was named coach on Jan. 24, he reached out to the former player about joining him. Possibilities for the Chargers.
On Thursday, Harbaugh said this was not the first time he had reached out to Kaepernick to suggest he work with the coaching staff. He added that the issue was brought up to him a few times when he was the head coach of the University of Michigan football team.
“I’ve been thinking that for a while, just because I respect his athletic mentality and because he’s a football person,” Harbaugh said when asked why he thought Kaepernick would be a good coach. “Al Davis (the late Raiders owner) saw something in me that made him think I would be a good coach if he chose to do that, and I saw the same qualities in Colin.
Kaepernick, who turns 37 on November 3, began kneeling during the national anthem before games on January 1, 2017, to protest social injustice and police abuse.
