Archyde: Kyle, thanks for joining us today. “Happy Gilmore 2,” is set to be a major event on Netflix. As the director, can you tell us what it was like stepping back into this iconic franchise while still bringing your unique vision?

Staying true to the Original’s Soul

Kyle Newacheck: Thanks for having me. It was an amazing experience, and a bit daunting at first! The original is beloved, so we knew we had to respect its legacy.Our goal was to capture the same spirit: the underdog, the slapstick comedy, the heartwarming moments—but with a fresh feel. Working with Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy again was a dream. Thay realy know what makes happy tick.

Casting choices and Chemistry

Archyde: The cast is a great mix of returning favorites and exciting new faces, including Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny. How did you go about building the cast, and what was the chemistry like on set?

Kyle Newacheck: Finding the right balance in casting “Happy Gilmore 2” was crucial. Bringing back Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald was non-negotiable – their characters are iconic. Travis Kelce, well, as you all mentioned, he was genuinely excited to be involved. It’s fantastic to have his energy. Bad Bunny brings a cool dynamic. We really wanted to create a true ensemble,where everyone brings something special. The energy on set was electric; it was clear everyone was excited to deliver a great film.

Kyle Newacheck: It was a key consideration. While keeping the core of the film about love and family, we are aware of how the world and entertainment have changed since 1996. We incorporated contemporary humor and themes, while keeping it grounded in happy’s world and the values that resonated with audiences the first time around. We made updates to his mannerisms so that it does not appear like he has been frozen in time.

What did you learn from working with the cast?

Archyde: What were some of the moast exciting things you learned from working with this cast?

Kyle Newacheck: I would say the most surprising thing that I learned was that the actors didn’t take themselves seriously at all. The attitude on set made working fun. We truly had a great cast. There was an overall feeling of collaboration, which made the whole process so enjoyable. Everyone was game to try new things. That openess made the set a very inclusive environment, with a lot of improv and collaboration.
