DIRECTOR Hanung Bramantyo is currently working on his latest film project entitled Gowok Kamasutra Jawa, which tells the story of the phenomenon of sexual shamans in Javanese society.
Hanung explained that the story theme of this film takes reference from one of the manuscripts in Javanese literature entitled Serat Centhini.
The Javanese film Gowok Kamasutra highlights aspects of sexual education which is one of the topics discussed in the script.
“So if you say that this film is regarding (Serat) Centhini, yes, but it’s not regarding Centhini in its entirety. We take part when teaching regarding sexual education,” said Hanung, quoted on Tuesday (16/7).
Hanung explained that the existence of sexual shamans known as Gowok has existed since the 1400s.
“So in the 1400s, Admiral Cheng Ho had relations with the Javanese kings and he brought a woman named Goo Wok Niang, whose job was to teach the nobles, especially the king,” said Hanung.

“At that time, the king had many wives, not just four, there were 10 or even 12, so this gowok taught the king how to satisfy women,” he added.
Through the film Gowok Kamasutra Jawa, Hanung wants to convey the role of husbands regarding satisfaction in husband-wife relationships which can influence household harmony.
“For me, this makes sense and this has never been informed to the wider community,” he said.
The film Gowok Kamasutra Jawa stars Reza Rahadian, Raihaanun, Lola Amaria, Ali Fikry, Nayla Purnama, and others.
The film, which was produced by Hanung and the production house MVP Pictures, is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2025. (Ant/Z-1)
