Hantavirus in Chile: First Death of the Year Confirmed in Santiago Metropolitan Region

Au Chilithe Secretaría Regional Ministerial de Salud (SEREMI) confirmed the first death of the year in the Santiago Metropolitan Region due to Hantavirus.

According to a press release from the authority, the deceased was 34 years old and came from the town ofThe mountain. The affected person began showing symptoms of the illness on November 6. His condition having worsened, he was admitted to the hospital in Talagantewhere he was diagnosed and died.

It is likely that the virus responsible is virus Andes which is endemic in this vast Andean region of Chile and whose reservoir is the long-tailed pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys longicaudatus).
