Hannibal Gaddafi, son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who has been detained in Lebanon for more than 7 years, has started a hunger strike to protest his detention without trial.

Hannibal Gaddafi’s lawyer said on Saturday that his client is serious and will continue the hunger strike “until the end.”

Gaddafi’s son has been held in Lebanon since 2015 following he was kidnapped from Syria, where he was residing as a political refugee.

Hannibal, who is married to a Lebanese woman, issued a statement describing his conditions, and said: “How can a political prisoner be held without a fair trial for all these years?”

Lebanese gunmen had kidnapped Hannibal, demanding information regarding the fate of the prominent Lebanese preacher Musa al-Sadr, who went missing in Libya 45 years ago.

Al-Sadr’s disappearance in 1978 remains a painful point for decades in Lebanon.

The Lebanese preacher’s family believes he may still be alive in a Libyan prison, although most Lebanese assume he is dead.
